General Hospital’s Sofia Mattsson Goes Down Sasha’s Memory Lane
Sasha Gilmore has been through a whirlwind of highs and devastating lows in Port Charles, and her portrayer, Sofia Mattsson, recently took a trip down memory lane to reflect on her character’s dramatic journey.
In a candid conversation on Daily Drama, hosted by General Hospital stars Steve Burton (Jason) and Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), Mattsson delved into the tumultuous life of Sasha. When asked about her character’s evolution, she didn’t hold back, immediately acknowledging that Sasha’s story has been a downward spiral.
From Con Artist to Tragic Heroine
Mattsson took it back to the beginning, recalling how Sasha first arrived in Port Charles under false pretenses. Originally introduced as a con artist posing as Nina’s (Cynthia Watros) long-lost daughter, Sasha’s deception set the stage for the chaos that would follow.
Her personal life quickly became entangled in love triangles, as she and Chase (Josh Swickard) orchestrated a fake affair to push Michael (ex-Chad Duell) and Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) together. This self-sacrificing act ultimately led Sasha into the arms of Brando Corbin (the late Johnny Wactor), marking the start of an epic love story.
“I loved working with Johnny so much,” Mattsson shared, reflecting on her time with Wactor, whose tragic passing still looms over the GH community. Their characters’ relationship was full of love and heartbreak, culminating in the devastating loss of their baby and, later, Brando himself.
Rock Bottom and Rebuilding
As if Sasha’s grief wasn’t enough, she faced a relentless series of misfortunes. Mattsson recalled Sasha’s downward spiral, including her highly publicized breakdown where she shattered a sleazy paparazzo’s car windshield.
“I smashed a car, a windshield,” Mattsson recounted, also bringing up how Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober) once had Sasha hooked on drugs. Despite the dark turn of events, she admitted that the destructive scene was oddly satisfying to film.
Co-host Bradford Anderson playfully added, “But at least you got to keep Brando’s mom,” referencing Sasha’s complicated relationship with Gladys (ex-Bonnie Burroughs).
The Soap Curse: No Happiness Allowed
Though Mattsson didn’t go into detail about Sasha’s forced stint in a mental institution or her unexpected shift from Deception model to Quartermaine cook, she made it clear that Sasha has endured more suffering than most.
“I know you can’t be happy on a soap, and as soon as you are, they have to ruin it,” Mattsson admitted. “But they’ve really gone far with me.”
With Sasha’s future still uncertain, fans can only hope that General Hospital will finally grant her some well-deserved peace. However, as soap history has shown, happiness is never guaranteed in Port Charles.
